Assignment 1

Make a rock/mineral collection.  Hunt in and around your house.  (Don’t temporarily appropriate anything belonging to your parents or a sibling without getting permission.)  Use the tables at the back of your textbook to help you identify minerals (p480 - 482).

Assignment 2

Make sugar crystals.  One of the 5 parts of the mineral definition is that it is a crystalline solid.  Rock candy is not a mineral, but it is a crystal and it is edible!  Follow the instructions here to make some at home.  In your science notebook, record the materials you use (ingredients and the items you use to mix, cook, etc.), the procedure (the steps to make the crystals), and your observations once the crystals start to form.
